Autodesk Civil 3D:
How to Automatically Set the Current Style Chosen During Object Creation as the Default Style

Issue:
In working with Autodesk Civil 3D, during creation of entities, you can select a different style to use rather than the default setting. There is also a setting which can make your selection become the default style setting for the next time the command is activated.

Solution:
1. Go to the Settings tab of the Toolspace
2. Right-click on the drawing name in the item list and select "Edit Drawing Settings..."
3. Select the Ambient Settings tab, and expand the General property Note the property Save Command Changes to Settings. If set to "yes," this will reset the default Style used to the one you select during creation of an object.

Tip: You can also use this setting farther down the hierarchy of the Settings tab. For each Object in the list you can right-click, choose "Edit Feature Settings" and make the same change to the General property as noted above. Further, this also works for the Commands item located under some of the objects in the Settings tree - right-click on a specific command sub-item and choose "Edit Command Settings..."

Increasing Tessellation of Curves from Exploded Autodesk Civil 3D Objects

Issue:
If you explode a designed profile or alignment, the curve tesellation is not matching the original object very well.

Solution:
Currently, you cannot control the degree of tessellation of curves when exploding Autodesk Civil 3D objects. As a work-around, follow these steps:

1. Enter PEDIT on the command line.
2. Select the polyline created from the exploded Civil 3D object.
3. Enter F for the Fit option.

Autodesk Civil 3D: Projecting a 2D Line or Polyline onto a Surface

Issue:
You want to project or drape a 2D line or polyline onto a surface, thereby creating a 3D object.

Solution:
To create a surface projection using a 2D line or polyline:

1. Click Grading menu > Create Feature Lines from Objects. Select the polyline and configure the settings as desired.
2. Click Grading menu > Edit Feature Lines > Elevations from Surface.
3. In the Set Elevations from Surface dialog box, select the surface onto which you want to project the feature line.
4. Select the feature line.
5. Verify the projection in 3D if desired. Note: If you want to create a 3D polyline, use the EXPLODE command.

Autodesk Map 3D: Fatal Error When Trying to Start Program

Issue:
When you tried to open Autodesk Map 3D 2007, the program crashed and you received an unhandled exception error message.

Solution:
If you see "Fatal Error: Unhandled access violation c0000094h" when you try to start Autodesk Map, the issue may be caused by your display driver. Often this type of error indicates an issue with the detection of the video card and driver. It is strongly recommended that you either update the video driver on the machine to the latest version or reinstall the driver if the latest driver is installed. You can find a list of supported graphics devices and their drivers on our Certified Hardware list. If the problem continues, you can try updating the desktop icon used to start AutoCAD by adding the NOHARDWARE switch on the Start line. For example, "C:\Program Files\Autodesk Land Desktop 2007\acad.exe" /nohardware. As a result, the video card or driver will not be detected when the program starts.

Autodesk Map 3D: Slow Performance When Working with ArcSDE Data

Issue:
You're connected to an ArcSDE server, and the data took longer to be displayed than in previous versions of Autodesk Map 3D.

Solution:
To improve performance when working with ArcSDE data, you can limit the number of used connections between Autodesk Map 3D and the ArcSDE server. Follow these steps:

Click Start menu (Windows)>Run. In the Windows registry editor, browse to the following location:
My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\AutoCad\R17.0\ACAD-5002:409\Applications\AcMapFeatureSourceManager\ShareConnections

Double-click the ShareConnections key and set its value to 1. This limits the number of connections opened between Autodesk Map 3D and ArcSDE by FDO to one. The default value of 0 allows multiple connections to be opened.

Warning! Problems caused by improperly editing the Windows registry could render your computer operating system unusable. Microsoft provides a wealth of critical information that you need to know about the registry in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. Use the Microsoft Registry Editor only at your own risk and only after backing up the registry as well as the system.dat and user.dat files as outlined for your operating system in the Microsoft Knowledge Base and in the related Autodesk solution. Additional information about the registry is also contained in the Help topics in the Microsoft Registry Editor.
