Inventor Supports Microsoft Vista!
There’s been much talk in the CAD community about moving to Windows Vista. Users of CAD software often push their computers to the limit and are wary of changes that could reduce their productivity, and early public benchmarks of many CAD applications on Windows Vista showed poor graphics performance that served to reinforce those doubts.

Autodesk Inventor to the Rescue!
The native graphics system for both Vista and all 64 bit Windows Systems is Direct3D.  Autodesk Inventor introduced support for Direct3D in Inventor 11, giving a complete year of production experience with Direct3D before the release of Windows Vista.  By leveraging Direct3D, implementation on Vista shows performance gains of 5% when compared with Windows XP while competitors still show performance decreases!

Equally important is the focus on quality.  While the RTM version of Inventor 2008 can be installed and used on Windows Vista – and many customers are doing this today – Autodesk decided to postpone official support for Vista to give time for additional testing with real world users.  The results of this decision are the Vista focused quality improvements incorporated in Service Pack 1 that are sure to delight customers.

With the Release of Service Pack 1 (SP1), Inventor 2008 is Now Officially Supported on Windows Vista!
Download Service Pack 1 from the Inventor download page: http://usa.autodesk.com/getdoc/id=DL9852114

The Service Pack resolves a number of usability issues to provide an excellent experience on Vista. It is strongly recommended that all customers wishing to use Inventor on Windows Vista download and install the Service Pack.

Autodesk will support the following five editions of Vista:

  • Windows Vista Enterprise
  • Windows Vista Business
  • Windows Vista Home Basic
  • Windows Vista Home Premium
  • Windows Vista Ultimate

Autodesk will not be supporting Windows Starter Edition which Microsoft markets in selected developing technology markets.

Customers who have purchased high end graphics cards for OpenGL support can still take advantage of Windows Vista as long as they have the appropriate Direct3D driver.  Customers should not run Inventor in OpenGL mode on Vista since Microsoft supports OpenGL through emulation which is significantly slower.
